Single Leg RDL

Single Leg RDL

  • WHY: This exercise will help with teaching you a different way to pick up light objects off the ground without having to bend too much at your back.

  • HOW: We will go over an example of picking up with your left hand. Approach an object that is on the ground. While reaching for the object with your left hand, you will perform a hip hinge and pick up your left foot and let your leg lift up into the air as your upper body and trunk leans forward. Think of your body as a seesaw, as your leg goes up behind you, your upper body leans and tilts forward. Grab the object and then return to standing position.

  • FEEL: You should feel your hip and hamstring muscles controlling you as you reach down toward the object. Make an effort to not excessively bend or rotate at your back. It is ok to feel a stretch in your hip and hamstrings when you do this type of lift. Your back and stomach muscles will be working as well, however we are trying to limit excessive motion at your back with this lifting technique.
